OLD ISLAND RESTORATION FOUNDATION
Founded in 1960, Old Island Restoration Foundation (OIRF) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to
the preservation and promotion of the historic architecture and cultural heritage of Key West.. Through the
support of members, donors, businesses, and public agencies, OIRF works to safeguard the island’s historic
resources while fostering a deeper appreciation of its past through educational programming, cultural events,
and preservation initiatives.
Old Island Restoration Foundation played a pivotal role in the effort to save The Key West Historic District (also known as Old Town) and helped shape the preservation policies that would later become part of the city’s Historic Architectural Review Commission. Since 1974, OIRF has been entrusted with the stewardship andmaintenance of the Oldest House Museum and Tom Majors Garden, which serves as its headquarters.
Owned by the State of Florida, The Oldest House dates to 1829 and stands as the oldest surviving residence in South Florida. Having endured fires, hurricanes, economic hardships, and nearly two centuries of change, thehouse is a remarkable testament to resilience. Today, it serves as a living chronicle of Key West’s history, connecting visitors to the people, stories, and traditions that have shaped the island from its earliest days to the present.
