Old Island Restoration Foundation president Kelly Friend awarded Scott Brown the 2014 Nancy Ordway Jameson Scholarship Friday at the Oldest House, 322 Duval St. The scholarship was founded in the 1960s in honor of Mrs. Jameson for her more than 22 years as a volunteer for OIRF and 13 years as volunteer director of the museum.
This $2,500 scholarship is available to a graduating Key West high school senior with plans to continue his or her education. The awards are based on general scholarship and the student's commitment to Key West's heritage as demonstrated by volunteer work for local institutions involved in art, history or architectural preservation. OIRF hopes that the awardees will bring back to the Keys the fruits of their scholastic labors in institutions of higher learning.
Brown will be attending the State University of New York Maritime College this fall and majoring in Mechanical Engineering while also pursuing a U.S. Coast Guard 3rd Assistant Merchant Marine Engineers License, Steam and Motor, Unlimited Horsepower. He will also be enrolled in the NROTC Strategic Sealift Officer Program where upon graduation he will be a commissioned officer in the U.S. Navy.
